Sunday Gratitudes #45

What are you grateful for this week? I’m grateful for…

🌹- Valentine’s Day!

🌹- Remembering to get a card well in advance AND remembering I had it and where.

🌹- Getting a reservation at our favorite restaurant at the last minute.

🌹- Posting about it on Instagram and the restaurant commented and was super happy, heh.

🌹- How nice the cop that pulled us over was. He even made suggestions about the best way to approach the DMV about fixing the problem. (Which is basically that they never sent me new registration tags after I renewed.)

🌹- Sitting next to a table of guys talking about cider, and I was brave enough turn around and give them a card from the cidery I work for. (They were talking about cider and Amsterdam, we were seated with our people.)

🌹- Reaching a compromise with my boss about which half of Friday I could take off to go to the DMV. Even though she got the better end of the deal.

🌹- Finally getting all that DMV crap taken care of, including updating my address. It only took a couple hours and $20.

🌹- Experimental baking. I took lots of pictures and wrote down the recipe as I made it up, but I made the cutest little mini pies on Friday after the DMV. The crust is my go-to recipe, which is always the best, but the filling was an experiment with two nectarines, 6oz of blackberries, freshly squeezed orange juice, and whatever else I had in the kitchen. It turned out well, though it still needs some perfecting.

🌹- My new purse. I wasn’t planning on getting one so soon, but my partner saw it, ran it by me to see if I liked it, and bought it for me as a three-months-early birthday present. I love it. And it was only $45!

🌹- Meeting more of my partners family. An aunt and uncle were visiting, and we joined everyone in the city for dinner with a view of the ocean.

🌹- The opportunity to give each couple at the dinner a mini pie to take home. It made me feel like a good lil baker. ‍

🌹- Waking up covered in cats.

🌹- Tampons. Also, Tampax has changed the color design on the Supers from light green to vivid real and blue swirls. Very fetching.

🌹- Lazy sunday mornings spent reading and commenting on WordPress posts.

🌹- Rain. I mean, I hope we don’t get too flooded, but the sound is nice to wake up to.

Sunday Gratitudes #44

What are you grateful for this week? I’m grateful for…

☕️ – Meeting my January writing, blogging, and walking goals so far.

☕️ – Baking some delicious gluten free orange spice cakes on Sunday evening. From a baking mix, true, but I drastically altered the recipe to include orange and chocolate.

☕️ – Having a great lunch break on Monday. Even though my boss sent me on errands that were all an hour plus of driving apart, I ended up taking my break in a gorgeous spot.

☕️ – Watching the season five finale of Buffy the Vampire Slayer with my baby.

☕️ – Sleeping in. Even if I only got to do it because I felt crummy and took a sick day.

☕️ – Being able to take most of the week off due to being sick. It’s a luxury that my bank account will be crankier about it than my boss.

☕️ – Getting a bunch of dishes washed. Accomplishment!

☕️ – Feeling not-sick enough to scoop the litter boxes. They really needed it. Plus, getting all the bags of old litter thrown away! (The trash-pickup can we share with our landlord has limited space.)

☕️ – Signing petitions. It seems like demonstrations of complaint will have more effect on this president than any that have come before.

☕️ – Realizing my health insurance is all set, and that even though I haven’t gotten my card in the mail I can call it up on my phone via an app. Now I can get my prescription refilled.

☕️ – A wine tasting Sunday funday. We found some great local places that only have a $5 tasting fee, too!

☕️ – Feeling hilariously superior. Have you ever, at work, been sent a list that you yourself made as if it were new information?

☕️ – Payday.

☕️ – Meeting up with one of my college buddies in the city! It was a huge deal to me because almost none of my east coast friends have visited me in California, and I haven’t seen him in six years. Also, he was the one who helped me set up the OkCupid profile that lead to my current relationship, and he finally got to meet my partner.

☕️ – Debates with my partner. As a rule I don’t really enjoy these things, but although we didn’t agree and we’re both rather annoyed that neither of us came around to the other’s point of view, we did reach a good ending point. Eventually. And I know it makes them happier to have these sorts of intense conversations than it does me, so that’s good for somebody at least.

☕️ – Screamin’ Mimi’s ice cream.

☕️ – Realizing in time that the weird brown thing next to my pillow when I woke up was a tiny nugget of cat poop and not touching it. (Lol thanks cats.)

☕️ – How happy the dogs were to see us when we came down for a visit.

☕️ – Being able to squeeze in time with my friend and his gf, my partners friend and her bf, my partner’s parents, and my family all in two days. Efficiency!

☕️ – Taking a pic of a chocolate sale to support a local art program. Because I also work for a local parenting magazine, I was able to post it to twitter and Instagram where people might actually see it and stop by. I hope it helped.

☕️ – The Sebastopol Starbucks. It’s just our favorite. The baristas there actually bother to read my name on my gold card instead of just asking and inevitably misspelling it. It’s a tiny thing, but it shows consideration and, idk, common sense. That’s what having your name on the card is for, right?

☕️ – Waking up to warm kitten snuggles. (Probably the same one who pooped by my pillow but whatevs. When I get up she’ll roll off my partner into the spot I just vacated and be all “WhaT?!” That will be my revenge.)

Grateful but not posting about it this week

I have a lot of things in my life to be greatful for. I’m in love with someone who loves me, and we have two snugly kittens. I got to meet three of my great-grandparents and all four of my grandparents. I am in good health. I have a job and a steady paycheck. I qualify for Covered California. I have a home. I have a really good pie crust recipe. I am on good terms with everyone in my family.

Lots of good things.

But right now I’m sad. Last week, my father’s mother passed away at the impressive age of 102, the same age her mother was when she died. Grammy had been saying she was ready to go for the past few years… but it’s still sad. It happened right before Thanksgiving and my dad’s birthday.

I will miss her so much. I will, as soon as I get to Montana next week for the funeral and all the nostalgia is going to hit me all at once. For now, I am merely sad.

Sunday Gratitudes #43

“Gratitude improves physical health. Grateful people experience fewer aches and pains and report feeling healthier than other people, according to a 2012 study published in Personality and Individual Differences. Not surprisingly, grateful people are also more likely to take care of their health.” (x)

What have you felt grateful for this week?

I’m grateful for…

🍜 – Slow Sunday mornings.

🍜 – Playing Mahjong games on my phone.

🍜 – My amazing partner, who just did like twenty pages of complicated genealogy charts for NaNo. Blows me away.

🍜 – Making progress on my NaNo novel and not being too fussed about my daily word count being below the goal average. I still feel like I’m king good progress on getting out a first draft of the story I want to tell, which is an accomplishment for me.

🍜 – Having a new fence! The old one was just a partial one and not completely closed in. Our landlord had to save up for it a bit longer than we expected, but it’s so nice to finally have more privacy in our bedroom, which has these huge gorgeous french doors and was until now totally visible from the back drive.

🍜 – The newly closed in backyard space. We can let the cats out now and not have to worry about chasing them in complete circles around the duplex.

🍜 – Posts I made on Facebook being shared. This hardly ever happens, and then suddenly it happens twice in one week: one about the election and one about the cider I work for finally being in our favorite restaurant.

🍜 – Being emotionally on the same page as the person I love best in the world.

🍜 – The lavender pills. My boss had me drive to her farm one county over two days in a row, which is about a 130 mile round trip on windy, somewhat nerve-wracking road, and I don’t care if lavender really works or if it was just the placebo effect but I was pretty okay with it.

🍜 – A good meeting with a guy about some freelance work. I have marketable skills as an experienced Facebooker, mwahaha.

🍜 – American Horror Story. Omg why so entertaining.

🍜 – Daylight Savings Time. I love gaining an extra hour. Long live fall!

🍜 – Getting all the leaves swept off the back porch. It took a long time and now it looks really nice out there.

Sunday Gratitudes #41

This would be number 42 — which is, after all, the answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything. But I didn’t post last Sunday due to a combination of forgetting until the last minute and then not having time. That’s life though, right?

I’m grateful for…

📌 – Writing so much lately!

📌 – Good feedback on what I’ve written from my partner.

📌 – Both of us doing NaNoWriMo this year!

📌 – My coworker giving me a Kleenex with a dab of peppermint oil to help counteract my vertigo.

📌 – A very good therapy session. At one point I was remind me that, when it comes to my fiction writing, I am very good at taking feedback andincorporating it into my edits. (Nonfiction is still touchy but I’m aware of and working on that.)

📌 – Fantastic seasonal pizzas at our favorite local farm to table restaurant.

📌 – New audiobooks from the library! It’s been a while.

📌 – Visiting the Sebastopol library for the first and second times. It’s a neat little place.

📌 – Our aforementioned favorite restaurant called me at work asking to buy cider! I left a business card with the bill because it makes me feel like a real adult and because I knew our former sales rep had been working to bring them on board before she left. Jackpot!

📌 – Getting my flu shot.

📌 – Making a doctor appointment and getting my prescription renewed.

📌 – Not being put on edge by the fact that it was a male doctor.

📌 – The doctor mentioning that over the counter lavender oil pills have good antidepressant propperties. I’m going to give those a shot.

📌 – Having five months worth of refills until I have to worry about my prescription again.

📌 – Leftover pizza!

📌 – Having a partner who can have a sweaty day and still smell really good.

Sunday Gratitudes #40

I’m grateful for…
☔️️ – Gluten free donuts. They were ridiculously good.
☔️️ – Keurig hot cocoa with a splash of chocolate milk.
☔️️ – Getting my resume, LinkedIn profile, and Facebook work history all updated.
☔️️ – Not being as as upset as I might have been without the foresight to guess something like it was coming. It was a mostly self-contained bout of insanity, don’t worry about it.
☔️️ – My dad driving up to (a) pick up a dresser we decided to un-handmedown and (b) taking me out to lunch.
☔️️ – My dad letting me vent. I wen back to work after lunch feeling a lot better about life. Sometimes he’s not the most sympathetic about this sort of stuff, but he actually seems to get it. The support is all the more valuable for that.
☔️️ – Seeing Barney and Polka again over the weekend. They are good dogs.
☔️️ – Being able to text and FaceTime with my partner while we’re separated by dog-sitting and a two hour drive. I miss my cutie.
☔️️ – Buckling down on eating healthier and having a salad for lunch.
☔️️ – Making progress on some work stuff. I feel like I’m getting a good handle on reorder calls now.
☔️️ – The fact that both season’s of MTV’s Scream are up on Netflix now. It’s cool to rewatch knowing all the whodunit punchlines.
☔️️ – My coworker complimenting my phone manner. Phone calls stress me out so it was really nice to hear.
☔️️ – How happy the kittens are to see me when I get home.
☔️️ – All of the frozen meals my partner bought me before going down to dog-sit.
☔️️ – Special cookies just for me.
☔️️ – A “Christmas morning” sensation of relief.
☔️️ – I meditated for twenty minutes!
☔️️ – Finally being successful in syncing the Calm app to the Health app on my phone.
☔️️ – Discovering a new sleep tracking feature on my phone now that I’ve updated it.
☔️️ – Having salad for lunch again.
☔️️ – The great brainwave of taking grapes to work to snack on.
☔️️ – Feeling like my hair was pretty tonight for FaceTiming.
☔️️ – Trading my salad for California rolls with a coworker who thought she was getting avocado rolls instead.
☔️️ – Meditating for another twenty minutes. Two days in a row!
☔️️ – Having my baby back!
☔️️ – Warm chai in the morning. Chai for two!
☔️️ – Getting the dishes washed. I’m not very good at washing them the night of, but on weekends I’ve taken  washing them while I wait for the chai water to boil.
☔️️ – Making good progress on the new outline for my novel! This draft is going to make a lot more sense.
☔️️ – All this rain we’ve been getting lately.

Sunday Gratitudes #39

“Paradigms describe how the world occurs to us. In my mind, there are two general ways that the world occurs to people.

The first is from a place of Abundance. This is where people see themselves as acting on the world. They see themselves as the one that has to change. They see the possibilities in all things. They practice gratitude consistently.

The second is from a place of Lack. This is where people see the world acting on them. They assume that things outside of themselves need to change. They focus on what they don’t have. They allow limitations to permeate their lives.” (x)

What have you felt grateful for this week?

I’m grateful for…

🍁 – My partner still loving me when I got us both sick.

🍁 – Our kittens! They’ve been snuggling each other so much lately. The other night Frankie was grooming Luci, then Luci got tired of it and tried to lick/bite her ear, but Frankie was like “Stop that” and held her down for more grooming. We got a video of it. Eventually they just started wrestling, but there was so much cute first.

🍁 – Kitten love as a cure for the common cold.

🍁 – Getting the trash taken out, finally. It has been piling up since we got sick and felt to crummy to deal with it.

🍁 – Cleaning the bathroom floor. It was all dusty and bugging me. Now it looks all nice and clean!

This is not how mine looked, but they were delicious anyway.

🍁 – Trying a new recipe for crustless apple pies. I wasn’t able to core the apples while they were still in halves so I ended up just slicing them and making an apple crumble instead, but I don’t even care because it was delicious. I had so many apples I’d accumulated from work (Gravenstein, Red Jonathan, Granny Smith, MacIntosh) that it was a fantastic little medley, and that was only half of them. “I have learned through the practice of mindfulness, gratitude, and spirituality a new path to maximizing my own awareness and happiness. I have started putting negative voices in my mind to bed and learning to accept and focus on my strengths.” (x)

What have you felt grateful for this week?

I’m grateful for…

Pizza and hard cider at Moose’s

🍂 – Visiting an authentic Montana saloon for lunch. Not only was there sawdust on the floor and graffiti carved into every available surface (including parts of the ceiling), but the pizza was amazing.

🍂 – Seeing buffalo, mule deer, elk, bighorn sheep, and one black-billed magpie during our visit to the National Buffalo Range.

🍂 – Finding Gramps’ memorial brick at the war memorial plaza in Kalispell. It took us a while of searching, but we did it.

🍂 – Getting to pet and pick up my uncle’s outdoor mouse-hunting’ cats, Fuzz and Tom. They were very polite about it, and I was missing my kitten snuggles. Continue reading “Sunday Gratitudes #38”

Sunday Gratitudes #37

One day late, but only because I was without internet connection on a family visit.

“We are anxious. We worry. We think. We think some more. To stop the cycle, we often need a pattern interrupt. Believing that there is abundance in the world and that there is enough to give and to receive often helps us to get off of the hamster wheel and into the stream of life.” (x)

What have you felt grateful for this week?

I’m grateful for…

🦄 – Bagels with cream cheese. Great breakfast.

🦄 – More micro-line pens! Now I have a bunch of them that can live in my briefcase for whenever I need them away from home.

🦄 – The three containers of Oregon Chai mix that I got at Raleys for 79 cents each.

🦄 – The Amazon gift card I used to buy the pens, which was a gift from my old supervisor. I really miss my old coworkers and job sometimes.

🦄 – Having a chance to focus on some tasks at work that I’ve needed to get cracking on for a while.

🦄 – The fish pond that we’ve set up in a half wine barrel on the back patio for our new goldfish!

🦄 – Remembering to bring a thermos with me on my lunchtime caffeine run and getting 50 cents off.

🦄 – Ben & Jerry’s Tonight Dough.

🦄 – Having a fish pond!

🦄 – The camaraderie and support of my current coworkers.

🦄 – How, when you sit in a hot car for half an hour, it feels really nice just about everywhere else. (It was a bad day in general so I really, really appreciated this feeling.)

🦄 -Commenting on a restaurant’s Instagram post about beer and inadvertently prompting them to post about our cider next! That’s what I love about social media. What a super interaction.

🦄 – Hot showers. It’s starting to get chilly at night! We haven’t set the space heater up yet but in the meantime I always have this to fall back on. Continue reading “Sunday Gratitudes #37”

Sunday Gratitudes #36

“In particular for some more introverted people, the practice of gratitude can improve self-worth in some. Often when we take on a label like introvert or shy, it can cause us to feel less about ourselves. But research shows gratitude reduces social comparisons that might cause us to feel like we are not enough.” (x)

What have you felt grateful for this week?

I’m grateful for…

🏆 – Dating the cutest patoot.

🏆 – New cat toys. Both of them have been playing with them, and Frankie almost never condescends to play with toys (while we’re around to watch). She was so pleased that she loafed next to me on the couch all night.

🏆 – Getting Frankie-loaf couch snuggles two nights in a row!

🏆 – Our friend Annie’s cat, Nitro, liking the toys she got him while she was up here visiting us.

🏆 – Sunshine Coffee Roasters.

🏆 – Stranger things. It’s so captivating! Although now that we’ve finished it, I am sad. I hope Netflix comes out with more soon.

🏆 – Caffeine. I felt like a zombie all morning at work until I made a thermos of tea. Didn’t even need to add honey.

🏆 – Raspberry lemonade. First my partner bought a bottle of it at the store, and since then I’ve just kept refilling it using my stash of Crystal Light packets of the same flavor. The latter is not as delicious, but it does help us resist the urge to buy more soda.

🏆 – Getting permission for a workday at the county fair! Woo, pouring cider!

🏆 – The press release I sent out actually getting posted somewhere! That’s a first for me. Also, bloggers are a lot easier to talk into doing that than more traditional media outlets.

🏆 – Delicious pasta sauce.

🏆 – Having Friday off (because I’m working at the fair on Saturday)!

🏆 – Whole grain naan sent from my old workplace. I miss those guys. I’m really glad I had the experience of working there for two years — it was good preparation for the small business start-up world, and the food and beverage industry.

🏆 – Being able to take pills. I needed the Advil to banish my headache.

🏆 – Getting so many things done on my day off!

🏆 – Clean litter boxes. Like, soap clean.

🏆 – Costco! Lol, we hadn’t been to Costco in a long time. And it was during the samples hours.

🏆 – Cotton candy!

🏆 – Going to the Mendocino County Fair & Apple Show. Pouring cider was fun, we ate a large curly fries that I swear was bigger than my head, and my partner won six goldfish. So… now we have six goldfish and two cats. Let the adventures begin.

🏆 – My partner volunteered to help pour at the California Cider Competition table and was not only super helpful, but really good at it! There is a future tasting room staff member/employee of the month if I ever saw one. (Now all we need is to get that tasting room built.)

🏆 – How happy my partner is about the fish. It’s pretty adorable.

🏆 – The way we won those fish. Technically we only earned won or two, because regardless of ability to aim that game was hard. Then the guy got so exasperated that we were still there and hadn’t won more fish yet that he just have us another four. (It had been a long, hot day. He’d spent all of it in a booth surrounded and occasionally being hit by pingpong balls. He was pretty done. It was great.)

🏆 – How many things I had to be grateful for this week!
